COMIC CON WRAP UP

What a whirlwind of a week. Try saying that ten times in a row! Well, Comic Con has come and gone and though I am sad it went by so fast I am happy to finally get some sleep. It was really a great show and we got a lot of love and support from all of you out there. A big thanks to those that stopped by our table to laugh, chuckle, swoon, and buy art. It means the world to me to know that my illustrations can bring a smile to all of your faces.

Here are some highlights from the week.

The biggest highlight for me was having Mr Jose Molina drop in to pick up a copy of Brownie Coats for himself. For those that do not know, he is a prolific writer and one of the original writers for the Firefly series. What was even cooler is that he came all the way over from Hall A to Hall H just to buy my print and get it signed. This was such a cool moment for me that I won't forget.

Also, I squeezed out about 40 commissions. Here are a few.

All in all this year surpassed last and I cannot wait for next year to come. First things first, tome to prep for Comikaze Expo and DesingerCon in November so stay tune Bat Fans!

Castle Grade School; Final New Print for Comic-Con

Hi everyone, as you can see with the change of my blog header I am getting ready for Comic-Con next week in San Diego. In my previous posts you can see some of the new things I will have available at my table DD-08 in Artists' Alley. Well, here is the 3rd and last print I promised to reveal.

It is called Castle Grade School.

Yearbook pictures were always a blast, mostly for the students but I felt bad for the teacher that always had to wrangle us in. This is my take on what a yearbook picture would be for these tiny "Masters of the Classroom." This print measure 12"x18" and is $20. I will have a limited amount at the con but not to worry, if you cannot make it out to San Diego you can always preorder it online by clicking below.

One more thing, if you are in Brooklyn, New York, I will have a piece displayed in the group show, Where Is My Mind at Bottleneck Gallery. It opens tonight at 7PM. Limited edition giclee prints on canvas and watercolor paper of Blink and Seek will be available for sale. Try and check it out cause there is going to be a ton of badass work on display.

A lot going on, thanks again for stopping by and stay tuned for more stuff next week! Plus, I promise to get back into my sketches and Sketch Fridays, my apologies for slacking on those.

Sneak Peek Friday

I have been super slammed getting ready for San Diego Comic-Con. I promise to get back on the sketch game next week. However, just thought I would post a sneak peek of something I have been working on. This is not a new piece but I have made some tweaks to it because it will be part of a postcard set!

This is the cover image for the set of 16 postcards (all are 4"x6"). I'm doing only a small run of these so I'll let you all know when they go on sale. For sure I plan to have them at Comic-Con. Only a few more weeks so literally back to the drawing board for me!

May the Fourth Be With You

Happy Fourth of September.

This is an illustration I finished this past July for both ISM:10 (celebrating ISM Gallery's 10-year anniversary) in Fullerton, CA, and San Diego Comic-Con International 2012.

I have included a couple of process shots to show how this one evolved.

(1) Super rough comp completed in Photoshop over an even rougher pen sketch:

(2) Cleaned up line art. I really do a lot of my designing at this point, making sure all the volumes and forms read clear. For me, when using line art it is really important to control your line quality and weight as well as ensuring that the overlapping forms are not confusing.

(3) Final Color (refer to the image at the beginning of this post). Excuse the cheesy 1-2-and-done steps. For this one I didn't save any layers but next time I'll make sure to show a better step by step for you all.

Thanks again for looking and....May the fourth be with you!

Sketching

Things are slowly getting back to normal for me post San Diego Comic-Con. I have a few illustrations I am working on for a gallery show in Seattle and for a personal piece I have been itching to bang out.

In the meantime, here are some sketches just to warm up the old noggin. I have been messing around with Sketchbook Pro as of late. Still figuring out the interface but I dig the feel and look of the brushes.

Enjoy!

Comic Con Recap 1

Comicon was a blast! Thanks to everyone who stopped by the table to show their support. It was great seeing some familiar faces and meet some new ones. I hope to return next year because this was one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

Big thanks to Kay, Dave Wilkins, Peter Han, Deviant Art, and the staff at Artist's Alley for everything this weekend. You all ROCK!
